In a study conducted in the mid-1990s, the author found that coerced settlement served to reinforce the Bedouins??? Arabic and Islamic communal identity rather than integrate the Bedouin into the Jewish-Israeli social mainstream. Using evidence gathered in 2000 in the planned Bedouin town of Segev Shalom/Shaqib al-Salam, the author presents the findings of a follow-up analysis of more recent changes in Bedouin identity formulation. The data show that Bedouin identity persists yet is slowly being supplanted by two emerging identity/identities matrices: the Arab/Palestinian/Muslim matrix and the Bedouin/Israeli matrix. The author demonstrates that these identity/identities matrices are not randomly chosen or expressed, but rather evolved out of the social, economic, and political environments in which the settled Negev Bedouin community is situated.
