Israeli Welfare Organizations: A Snapshot

Civil society and nonprofit organizations are playing a growing role in the field of welfare in Israel. In 2016, 43,000 nonprofit organizations were registered, a particularly high share of organizations per capita. Of them, 15 percent were active in the field of welfare. However, to date, there has been a lack of data on the scope of these organizations’ activities and funding. A new study from the Taub Center, conducted in cooperation with the Center for the Study of Civil Society and Philanthropy at the Hebrew University, maps out the welfare nonprofits in Israel. The study finds that a disproportionately small percentage of these organizations serve Arab society, and those that do lack the fundraising and volunteer resources utilized by Israel’s Haredi society. The study states that the dearth of organizations active in Arab society, and the sector’s limited share of the resources available to civil society organizations, limit Arab citizens’ access to social services, despite the many needs that exist.
